Xtend Original BCAA by Scivation is a zero-sugar amino acid drink mix with 7 g of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) per scoop in a 2:1:1 ratio of leucine, isoleucine and valine. Each serve also lists 2.5 g of L-glutamine, 220 mg sodium, 170 mg potassium and vitamin B6. This tub has 30 serves, in flavours such as Blue Raspberry Ice, Lemon Lime and Watermelon Explosion.

Ingredients

Blue Raspberry Ice (current US label): L-Leucine, L-Glutamine, L-Isoleucine, L-Valine, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Vitamin B6 (as Pyridoxine Hydrochloride), Citric Acid, Natural and Artificial Flavours, Malic Acid, Acesulfame Potassium, Sucralose, Polydextrose, Spirulina Extract (colour).

Older-label tubs also list 1,000 mg citrulline malate and artificial colours, with the same BCAA, glutamine, B6, sodium and potassium amounts.

Allergens: the current label shown by the brand has no allergen statement. Older-label tubs state that they contain soy and are made on equipment that also processes dairy, wheat, peanuts, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, sulphites or corn. Check your tub.

How to use

Mix 1 scoop with about 300 to 415 ml (10 to 14 fl oz) of water and shake well. On training days, have 1 serve during exercise and 1 after. On non-training days, have 2 serves spread through the day.

FAQs

Do BCAAs actually work?

The AIS places BCAAs in Group C, meaning the evidence does not support a benefit for athletes. If you already eat enough protein, extra BCAAs add little. Many people still use Xtend as a zero-sugar, flavoured drink with electrolytes to sip during long sessions.

When should I drink Xtend?

On training days, the label suggests 1 serve during exercise and 1 after. On rest days, have 2 serves spread through the day. Mix each serve with about 300 to 415 ml of water.

Does Xtend Original contain caffeine?

No. The Xtend Original panel lists no caffeine or other stimulants, so it suits evening sessions or people who avoid caffeine. If you pick up a different Xtend product, check its label, as formulas differ across the range.

Is it sugar free?

The current label lists 0 g of sugars and less than 1 g of carbohydrate per serve. It is sweetened with sucralose and acesulfame potassium, and has about 5 Calories per serve.
